Spirituality is truly trending nowadays. Personally, I don’t think that is necessarily a bad thing, however, I do feel that it is very important that we approach spirituality in a conducive way.
What is having a spiritual practice all about?
There are as many paths as there are people. No path is the same. What work for some may not work for all. This is not a one size fits all mechanism. That being said, there is one thing, however, I think needs to be understood and this is the “practice” aspect of it all. Your spiritual practice is just that, a practice. The noun “practice” is defined by two ways;
“the actual application or use of an idea, belief, or method, as opposed to theories relating to it.”
“the customary, habitual, or expected procedure or way of doing of something.”
Putting focus on the first definition, an ACTUAL application. When it comes to your spiritual practice, you have to actualize what you have been conceptualizing. I find that many get stuck in the phase of doing a lot of research, reading, and discussing of spirituality but are hesitant when it comes to “putting their money where their mouth is”. If this is you, let this be your sign to get a move on! It can be daunting, especially when you have a mountain of knowledge to bring to fruition. It might even seem “lesser” to have to practice meditating for 10 minutes a day whilst you are reading books on advanced spiritual practices that call for meditating for hours a day. Understand that your first steps have already been taken via the interest into your spirituality and the research into your spirituality. It is time for you to fully experience the beauty that comes with this side of life in real life!
Now, looking at the second definition, let’s focus on the word habitual and customary. This is extremely important. You want your spiritual practice to be a habit. You want your practice to simply be a part of your normal every day life. Your life is spiritual, period. It is so important that we adopt our views of a spiritual practice to this. When you practice a sport or activity you are passionate about, you practice it every day. You see where you can grow and improve every day. The same should be for your spiritual practice. If meditating is something you struggle with, you should be practicing meditation every single day. You should be taking notes of what occurs during your meditation when you are done every day. Of course, there may be a few days when it just can’t be done but it should be a part of your every day life.
This is a practice.
You are on a journey so you should be on your way somewhere no? Now, don’t misunderstand me, this does not mean to rush. Go at your own pace, but my goddess, GO!
Revere your spiritual practice! Enjoy it! Live it!
When you actively view and treat your spiritual practice as a true practice, you will see just how much your life changes. You will see just how much beauty and magic arises in your life. You will see how easily your maneuver through the dark times. You will see all that you’ve been working towards and more!
